Mumbai: A bus that was on auto mode, which started moving after its drivers stepped out, hit and injured three labourers a few yards away from the international airport
on Tuesday. The drivers of the Air India (AI) passenger bus were arrested by the Sahar police on Tuesday and booked for negligence. The police said the duo had started the auto-pressure passenger bus without switching off its engine. The bus rammed into the labourers who were working only 50 feet away. They sustained minor injuries.
Officials said the drama unfolded at around 9 am when the two drivers, B B Patil and P C Pujari, had just reported to duty. "The bus is automatic and takes around 15 minutes to start moving on its own. The driver behind the steering wheel has to direct it and use brakes to control speed. However, in this case, the drivers ignored the vehicle and did not keep a tab on the time," said a police official.
Officials added the bizarre drama heightened after the vehicle started. A Larsen and Toubro labourer jumped in and pulled the brake. The vehicle permit was immediately confiscated by Mumbai International Airport (MIAL) and the injured labourers were rushed to Ladycare Hospital in Marol.
