Kolkata: The Football Players’ Association of India (FPAI) on Friday said they believed as completely baseless and false the allegations of molestation of an air-hostess on a flight from Goa by Churchill Brothers player Odafa Onkeya Okolie and two others.
"We are shocked to learn about the accusations against fellow footballers from Churchill Brothers. We have learnt from our team mates and colleagues that the accusations are ‘completely false and baseless’," said FPAI in a statement.
Three players of the leading football club- Nigerians Odafe Okolie (25) and Ogba Kalu (20), and goalkeeper Arindam Bhattacharya (20) - were arrested on Jan 5 for allegedly misbehaving with an air hostess and crew on board a SpiceJet plane and the next day granted bail. The team's owners dubbed the incident a "conspiracy".
FPAI said: "According to our teammates, Odafa Onkeya Okolie was talking to his team mates and while gesturing accidentally made contact with the air-hostess. Odafa immediately apologized and the air-hostess did not take any offence as this normally happens in an airplane where space is a constraint. However, the steward on duty allegedly created a ruckus and forced the air-hostess into making the complaint."
