Thiruvananthapuram: The State Police have tightened the procedures for issuing entry passes to workers inside the airports in the wake of security concerns. As per the existing procedure, workers in airports are being issued entry passes by the Airports Authority of India (AAI) on the basis of the verification reports issued by the police stations under the limits of which the worker concerned resides.
In a fresh directive, DGP Jacob Punnoose said that the existing procedures should be stopped immediately. ``Entry passes should be issued by the AAI hereafter only on the strength of the Police Clearance Certificate (PCC) issued by District Superintendents of Police (DSP) or City Police Commissioners (CP) , `’ says the directive. PCCs are issued by the DSPs and CPs after detailed verification by Police Special Branch about the character and antecedents of the individual as well as the other personal details furnished by him.
Works in the airports, including even ground handling activities, have been outsourced to private firms on a contract basis. The workers employed by these private firms often get access to sensitive areas in the airports. There are reports that this was posing a threat to the security of airports.
Moreover, there were several instances of baggage of passengers being stolen from airport terminals.
