IA challenges compensation to Ahmedabad crash victims in SC

New Delhi: Kin of the 133 passengers and crew who were killed in the 1988 crash of an Indian Airlines Mumbai-Ahmedabad flight are still battling for honourable compensation for the loss of their dear ones.
The crash, on the outskirts of Ahmedabad airport on October 19, 1988, left 133 of the 135 occupants of Boeing 737 aircraft of Indian Airlines dead. The trial court in 2003 decreed that the kin were entitled to receive Rs 2 lakh per passenger. It also directed that the total compensation amount be shared between IA and Airport Authority of India in a ratio 70:30.
Not satisfied with the paltry sum after 15 years, the relatives moved Gujarat High Court, which by a judgment dated October 14, 2009, enhanced the compensation to Rs 8.2 lakh per passenger and revised the sharing ratio between IA and AAI to 90:10.
Aggrieved by both enhancement of compensation and revision of the sharing ratio, IA moved Supreme Court on Friday and a Bench comprising Justices H S Bedi and J M Panchal issued notice on the petitions and posted them for detailed hearing.
