The Mumbai International Airport Ltd (MIAL) on Monday sacked its general manager, land affairs, for excavating a part of the airport land without informing the government and also for using another part of the airport as dumping ground.
The company will now have to shell out several crores as royalty for carrying out mining without government permission; what will add to its expenses is the money that it will have to spend to remove the huge mounds of earth that have been dumped illegally.
MIAL general manager, communications, Manish Kalghatgi, confirmed the sacking. "We conducted an internal inquiry and the services of Sanjay Pandey have been discontinued,'' he said.
Collector Vishwas Patil said a probe was on to ascertain how much earth had been excavated. "Once the report is submitted, we will know what is the amount due to us and charge the company accordingly,'' he said.
Under the Maharashtra Land Revenue Code, earth is classified as a minor mineral and, therefore, its excavation attracts royalty. "In case of evasion, the penalty is three times the royalty amount,'' said advocate Godfrey Pimenta, who has been following up the issue.
