Mumbai: At the city airport, at least, recession is a thing of the past now. In December, the airport handled 2.53 million passengers creating a record of sorts as it is the highest number of passengers ever handled by an airport in India in a month. The Delhi airport came a close second at 2.45 million passengers handled for the same month.
In December 2008, Mumbai airport had handled only 1.96 million passengers. “Ever since August 2009, there has been an increase in passenger traffic. But it was in December that the earlier held record was breached. Till then, January 2008 with its passenger traffic of 2.38 million was the highest ever handled by the (Mumbai) airport,’’ said a Mumbai International Airport Pvt Ltd (MIAL) spokesperson.
The Airports Council International (ACI) had predicted that December would show further growth with major airports in China, India and Brazil leading domestic passenger traffic recovery.
