At a time when Nacil is in the red and various avenues are being explored to raise money, there are charges that the airline is being short-changed on a valuable asset — land. Nacil and Mumbai International Airport Ltd (MIAL) have issues over land worth crores close to Chatrapati Shivaji International Airport (CSIA) for two-and-a-half years. Claims and counter claims have been flying fast and furious since then.
MIAL, private developers of CSIA since 2006, has been trying to expand the airport by acquiring land leased out by Airport Authority of India (AAI) to Nacil. What is under contention is 109.21 acres out of a total leased land of 219 acres, which includes AI's 53-acre housing colony in Kalina. Plus, a 5.64 acre sports complex used by Nacil employees, says MIAL, should also be surrendered.
Objections were raised by Nacil officials over what they perceived was an attempt to take the land for a pittance. A letter dated May 19, 2009, by an Nacil director of Related Business to a regional director, which TOI has possession of, highlights some of the anomalies in the plans: "In the housing colony, flats shown are not in conformity with projections, provision for only one school is indicated as against two existing and medical facilities are not shown. The two existing football grounds with a total area of 4.25 acres in each of the housing colonies have shrunk to a single playground of 1.50 acres. MIAL is prepared to give us only one LMD hanger instead of the two we have now, the second one being planned to be acquired near the Mithi River to be constructed in three years, which will affect our line maintenance jobs."
