Apology sought for airport harassment

A leader of the Sikh community has sought a formal apology from the Indian Government for the harassment suffered by his wife and toddler son at the New Delhi International Airport last month.
The Indian community in general and Sikhs in particular are rallying behind the efforts of the New Zealand Sikh Society Auckland Secretary Ranvir Lali Singh in getting justice for the shabby treatment received by his wife Shubhneet Kaur and their two-year-old son Bachint Vir Singh at the Indira Gandhi International Airport on January 12. Indian Newslink carried a detailed report in its January 15, 2010 issue.
His lawyer, Barrister Matt Robson has written to the Indian High Commissioner in Wellington seeking an apology to both Ms Shubhneet and Master Bachint, a comprehensive inquiry into the incident and financial compensation.
However, Mr Singh told this newspaper that he was more interested in getting to know how a New Zealand citizen, travelling alone with her toddler son could have been refused entry, harassed and deported.
According to an Indian High Commission statement, the Mission had sought the details of the incident from the concerned authorities in India.
