Federa airport gets AAI nod

Ahmedabad: The Airports Authority of India (AAI) has given the much-needed technical clearance to the greenfield international airport at Federa village, 85 km from Ahmedabad. There is also a plan to connect the present Sardar Patel International airport to the new one at Federa.
A seven-member aviation team of the AAI had visited the greenfield project site last month and had sought basic trade and commerce-related details in the region from the Gujarat Chamber for Commerce and Industries (GCCI).
Federa was earmarked by the state government for the development of the airport two years ago because of its strategic importance. It has a logistic proximity to Dholera, which falls under the influence of the Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridor (DMIC) and is also close to two major Special Investment Regions (SIR), planned at Sanand and Changodar.
The airport, spread over 28 sq km, will have two different runways for takeoff and landing totalling 4.5 km. A highly placed source at AAI, Ahmedabad said, “AAI has given its in-principle approval for the airport and has categorically said the airport is technically viable for both passenger and cargo flights.”
