AAI embarking on project to tap cargo potential

Coimbatore: Airports Authority of India (AAI) is embarking on a plan to tap cargo potential, expand cargo handling capacity and provide enough space for airliners, Customs department and cargo handling agents.
General Manager (Cargo) Y.K. Goel and Airport Director M.R. Vasudeva recently inspected the Coimbatore cargo terminal and chalked out plans for its expansion. The objective is to tap the potential available in Coimbatore for cargo. Exporters await international airliners to start operating services from Coimbatore to at least a few stations.
Airport sources said customs authorities planned to introduce soon e-bay system wherein Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) as part of the e-bay system could be enabled between the custodian of the cargo i.e., the Airport Authority of India, the Customs and the trading community. It would be a collaborative effort by the Ministry of Commerce, Airports Authority of India and the Customs department. This would ensure faster sharing, exchange of information in a paperless and speedy process.
