AAI report on BIA passenger capacity erroneous

Bangalore: The Bengaluru International Airport Limited (BIAL), promoters of the Bengaluru International Airport, in a re-counter filed in the Karnataka High Court on Wednesday opposed Airport Authority of India’s (AAI) report which says that BIAL had cooked up peak hour passenger capacity figures.
The BIAL has stated it has developed the infrastructure in the airport as claimed by it in an earlier submission before the High Court.
After the new airport became operational, the AAI had visited and assessed the airport capacity, however, the report was erroneous in nature and the methodology used was impracticable, the BIAL has contended.
On the question of the User Development Fee (UDF), the division bench headed by Justice N Kumar observed that UDF does not come under the purview of public interest. The court has recorded the hearing of the petitioner’s.
Recently, the AAI had filed a detailed counter in the High Court alleging that the BIAL had given misleading figures regarding airport capacity assessment.
In its counter filed by D P Singh, General Manager (CP and MS), the AAI stated that BIAL’s assessed peak hour passenger capacity of 6,304 is neither consistent with the concession agreement nor with the International Air Transport Association(IATA) figures.
During past 14 months the demand was less than the capacity, and therefore, it can not be considered as a ground for BIAL’s claim for higher capacity, the AAI had stated.
