Bangalore: Opposition parties, except Janata Dal (United) today staged a dharna in the well of the Legislative Council House after the government rejected their demand for setting up a House Committee for obtaining consent of farmers for the proposed Airport project.
Raising the issue under section 330, P C Kondaiah of the Congress alleged that acquisition of 930 acres of fertile land for the proposed airport would affect farmers and irrigation in 7000 acres of land in the vicinity and instead government could search for alternative place for the airport project. He demanded withdrawal of the Notification issued for acquisition of land.
M R Sudarshan of the Congress suggested that Kopal could be selected for the Airport project. ''We are not against the Airport project but it should not be at the cost of farmers interests. He also demanded that the government withdraw cases filed against farmers who agitated against acquisition of their land. Opposition leader Mottamma said the government should rethink about acquisition of the lands for the airport project.
