Why's NACIL not AI yet, asks govt

New Delhi: The aviation ministry is trying to undo at least one 'mistake' of Air India-Indian Airlines' merger. Last year, it approved the merged company, National Aviation Company of India Ltd (NACIL)'s, proposal to do away with this name and switch over to Air India. While more than a year has passed since this request was made and approved, the ministry has asked NACIL the progress on this front.
"There were certain sensitivities involved last year as changing name to AI would have angered ex-IA employees. We want to change the name to AI once this becomes the common code for both AI and IA flights. Since merger, domestic flights are still operating on IA code," said a senior official. Moreover, sources pointed out, the air operator permit (AOP) on which the national carrier's flights operate is in the name of NACIL. "Changing AOP is a tedious process. Since we have a number of other pressing issues at hand, we would much rather change name once big things like common code are sorted out," said sources.
The much-delayed process of having a common code and integrating IT operations — something that has delayed NACIL's joining Star Alliance -- is finally been set in motion.
