Bangalore International Airport has announced the commencement of Fire Prevention Week from this today that is nationally observed as ‘Fire Service Day’. This annual campaign is held by BIAL with the primary focus on fire prevention awareness and safety measures for the staff, airlines, airport partners and concessioners of the airport. This year, the airport’s Airport Rescue and Fire Fighting (ARFF) team is going a step further by taking its expertise and training to schools from neighbouring villages.
At the inauguration of the programme, Marcel Hungerbuehler, CEO, BIAL pointed out, “Simple precautions can be taken to avoid a fire and basic awareness of how to react if an incident does happen, can save precious lives. With the rise in the number of fire incidents within the country and the state, it becomes critical to equip school children with basic fire prevention and safety techniques which will have a ripple effect among others in their community. As a step towards achieving this, we aim to reach out and train 260 children from 12 neighbouring schools in the coming year.”
BIAL started this week-long activity by providing on-site training to the first batch of 25 students from the Government School, Yerthaganahalli. The children were taken through class-room training on home and fire safety followed by a mock drill at the fire pit. On the completion of a successful training programme, each child received a participation certificate from Marcel Hungerbuehler.
The school teacher BN Venkatesh commented, “A fire can break out at any time and through this program we have learnt how important time and presence of mind is to save lives and property. This is the first time that someone has come forward to impart such valuable information to us for which are grateful. By conducting this program for our school and many other schools in the vicinity, the Bengaluru International Airport will empower the larger community with knowledge of how to react wisely if we are faced with a hazardous situation.”
