Air passengers were warned yesterday flights could be grounded for another week because of the Icelandic volcano.
Thousands of journeys across the continent were cancelled again as the chaos deepened with high altitude particles from the volcano bringing Europe air traffic to a standstill.
Travellers were told they could be stranded for up to 10 days after turning up at airports across the continent to seek a way back to the UK.
Despite hopes Scotland's airspace would return to normal, airports remained deserted.
Scientists and weather experts were yesterday attempting to work out just how long the impact of the eruption of Eyjafjallajoekull would last.
Teitur Arason, of the Icelandic Meteorological Office, said: "The ash will continue to be directed towards Britain and Scandinavia.
Scientists in Iceland were hoping to fly above the volcano to attempt to work out how much longer the ash emissions would last.
A plume of ash 5.3 miles high was visible on Saturday.
Dr David Rothery, of the Open University's earth sciences department, said that fine ash at the top of the column is likely to be drawn into the high altitude winds, spreading it south across the continent.
A handful of f lights were able to operate at Scotland's airports yesterday but for the majority of the day the nation's airports remained quiet.
