Four airlines' pilots join hands to make your flight safer

Mumbai: For the first time in Indian aviation history, almost 50% pilots countrywide have come together to form a professional association.
Their Air Line Pilots Association India (ALPAI) will be affiliated to the International Federation of Air Line Pilots Association (IFALPA).
ALPAI hopes to make Indian skies safer by sharing technical data with IFALPA members. The apex body of four pilot associations in India became an IFALPA member last month.
The ALPAI members are the Indian Pilots Guild (IPG) of Air India pilots, Indian Commercial Pilots Association (ICPA) of Indian pilots, Society for Welfare of Indian Pilots (SWIP), a Jet pilots’ body and Integrated Pilots’ Welfare Association (IPWA), founded by Kingfisher pilots, but with open membership.
Thus, ALPAI has 2,000 of the total 4,500 pilots flying in India as members; 500 of them being expatriates, are not members.
An ALPAI member said, “Having a majority of Indian professional pilots together not only adds to the global voice of pilots, but also gives Indian pilots an opportunity to work along with IFALPA on air safety, and their committees. The committees work along with organisations like the International Civil Aviation Organisation and the International Air Transport Association, besides aircraft manufacturers like Airbus and Boeing.”
Allaying fears of airlines being arm-twisted, the member said they did not form the body with the intention to go on strike.
