Ahmedabad: The Rs 300-crore swanky airport building, inspired by the Changi airport in Singapore, will be inaugurated on May 20. The Director of Media and Communication, Ministry of Civil Aviation, Maushumi Chakravarty confirmed the date.
She told Mirror: “The date which we have received from Airports Authority of India (AAI) is May 20. Union Minister of Civil Aviation Praful Patel will inaugurate the building.”
This is surprising since there is a lot of unfinished work on the building. When Mirror quizzed her on this, she said, “We got an invite from AAI. The date is mentioned in the minister’s schedule. We have no information about the building.”
A senior Ahmedabad airport official requesting anonymity said, “The building will be commissioned later on, but will be inaugurated this month. We have time till May 20 to prepare the building for inauguration.”
The new airport terminal, spread over 41,000 sq m, has lots of work remaining before it gets commissioned. Basic requirements like water and electricity facilities are yet to be installed in the building apart from paint and glass work.
The terminal will have four aerobridges and 32 check-in counters for different airlines. It will be able to accommodate around 1,600 passengers at any given time.
