Chandigarh: Taking a flight from Chandigarh airport is far from being a pleasurable experience, when around 400 travellers have to remain cramped up in an area meant for 100. The situation is unlikely to change over the next six months, with the deadline for completion of construction of the new domestic terminal getting deferred until November on technical grounds.
Construction activity to accommodate more passengers at the airport, which sees 11 flights daily, had started in April 2008, with its completion slated for July 2009. However, the deadline was later extended till July this year.
Inadequate seating capacity is just one among the other problems plaguing the airport like no fire safety measures and parking crunch. The existing building does not have a route for VIPs, who are left at the mercy of the Air Force to provide them a safe passage. Poor infrastructure was also one of the reasons why the lone international flight to Dubai failed to take off from city.
