De-recognised unions non-committal on Monday strike call

Mumbai/New Delhi: The situation in Air India continues to simmer as the de-recognised unions remain guarded on their earlier call for a strike on May 31.
The Air Corporation Employees Union (ACEU) had served a strike notice on the Air India management on May 14 for a strike on May 31 protesting against delays in payment of salaries, shortfall of cabin crew and the ground handling policy of the Government.
Though non-committal on the future course of action, Mr Dinakar Shetty, President, ACEU, said the strike notices were served in the past and there was no need to serve any more.
“If the union decides to go on strike, it can,” he added.
Even as the ACEU called for a strike this month-end, the All-India Aircraft Engineers Association (AIAEA) and ACEU had gone on a flash strike earlier this week, protesting the alleged ‘gag orders' issued by the AI management on union leaders who were speaking to the press – after the crash of an Air India Express' flight in Mangalore on May 22.
“The engineers' union was just pointing out irregularities in the air safety aspects of a flight. It was given an airworthiness clearance by someone who did not have the authority to certify that aircraft,” said Mr Shetty.
