Indian arrested with 20 kilograms of heroin

Dhaka: Customs intelligence arrested an Indian with around 20 kilograms of heroin from Shahjalal International Airport early yesterday.
The arrestee was identified as Elamurugu Maruthamuthu, 28, from Tamilnadu, India. He was leaving Dhaka for Indonesia via Singapore by a flight of Singapore Airlines.
"Maruthamuthu was carrying an Indian passport and we found heroin from his luggage at departure lounge around 1:00am,” Customs Superintendent Shamsul Islam Khan told The Daily Star.
"He hid the drugs inside a water heater to dodge the intelligence", said Shamsul.
During preliminary interrogation, Maruthamuthu said he entered Bangladesh through Benapole border on May 1.
Maruthamuthu claimed that Raja, from Chennai, had supplied heroin for smuggling it into Singapore from India via Bangladesh.
Customs officials said another person might have been with Maruthamuthu, but he somehow managed to escape.
