Mangalore airport may go international soon

Mangalore: The much-awaited new terminal building of the Mangalore airport was inaugurated on Saturday by Union minister of state for civil aviation Praful Patel. In an interaction with media persons on the occasion, the minister said, a proposal seeking international airport status to Mangalore would be placed before the Union cabinet at the earliest.
"Mangalore airport is a declared customs airport," he said, adding, this would not hamper international operations in any manner.
The new integrated terminal building was a pre-requisite for upgrading the status of the airport, he said.
The other requirement to upgrade status to an international airport, Patel explained, is the availability of a 9,000 ft runway.
Nearly Rs 180 crore has been spent on the new terminal and another Rs 12 crore on fire safety measures. Acknowledging the need for cargo facility here, Patel said the Airport Authority of India would build a cargo complex here.
