Banned AI union signals strike ahead

New Delhi: Even as Air India grapples to recover from the two-day strike which left 30,000 passengers stranded, more trouble seemed headed its way after the management sacked 58 employees, suspended 24 others and derecognized two unions for the agitation, on Thursday. The airline's engineers association, one of the affected bodies, has issued another notice to the management threatening to strike work from June 12.
On Thursday, AI flights operated normally in all cities with the exception of Delhi. At IGI, where AI was working on a curtailed schedule, there were 25 flight cancellations of which five were finally restored. Airline officials said that from Friday, all flights are expected to resume as per normal schedules.
Meanwhile, the National Aviation Company of India Ltd (NACIL), the parent company formed after the AI-Indian Airlines merger, ordered that the offices of derecognized unions - All India Aircraft Engineers Association and Air Corporation Employees Union - be sealed across the country.
The only positive fallout of the strike for the employees is that the salary payment for the month of May, which had been deferred to June 7 due to the company's financial troubles, will now be made on June 1. To justify their overdrive in handing out termination and suspension letters and contain its fallout, the management has called for a meeting of all leaders of the airline's recognized unions. It meanwhile said no staff member who went on strike will be paid performance linked incentive for May.
