New Delhi: Alarmed at the rising incidence of near misses, mid-air and operational area scares at Mumbai airport in the last few days, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) is despatching a high level team of officers from Delhi for an inspection there on Saturday. The team, comprising regulator's directorate of aerodrome standards and led by joint DG (in charge of air safety) A K Sharan, will hold a meeting with all stakeholders like airlines and inspect the cross runways.
"There have been some cases of simultaneous operations on Mumbai's cross runways in past few days. Mumbai needed a wake-up call and we are sending a high level team that will minutely check the runways. Given the situation there, proper markings are an absolute must to see that aircraft do not stray in each others path even by mistake," said a senior official.
Sharan took over as one of the three joint DGs (who are next only to the DG) on Thursday. This crucial inspection will be his first big task in the new position.
The decision to inspect Mumbai was taken recently, possibly in the wake of incidents in past few days.
