Vancouver: Perviz Madon made a last-minute decision to fly to Ottawa from North Vancouver, B.C., this week for the release of the historic report on the 1985 Air India bombing that killed her husband Sam.
She decided to tear herself away from work and family commitments to hear what former Supreme Court justice John Major had concluded after years of testimony and evidence in his commission of inquiry into the deadly bombing and subsequent police investigation.
Major's report will be released Thursday morning in Ottawa.
The five-volume document has been completed since last summer, but had to be translated into French. Each volume reflects a mandate given to Major when the inquiry was called in May 2006.
The first volume will be an overview of all the evidence heard during 19 months of public hearings and a few months of additional written submissions between parties.
The other volumes will consist of the pre- and post-bombing phases of the investigation, the problems with information-sharing between the RCMP and the Canadian Security Intelligence Service, witness protection and the difficulties of running terrorism trials. Aviation security issues make up the fourth volume, while the final volume covers the issue of terrorism financing.
Lawyers for the Air India Victims' Family Association made recommendations to the inquiry to address evidence about missed warnings and a lack of intelligence-sharing between the RCMP and CSIS.
