New runway lights to block straying planes

Mumbai: Following a series of dangerous runway incursions at Mumbai airport, Mumbai International Airport Pvt Ltd (MIAL) has procured 15 obstruction lights to be placed at crucial runway-taxiway intersections so that aircraft do not stray needlessly onto the runway.
The 15 mobile warning lights will be moved around according to necessity and will be placed in the path of aircraft so that they can’t wrongly access the runway, officials said. The lights have been recommended by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation’s (DGCA) air-safety department. Incidentally, the DGCA team which was in Mumbai recently to investigate the incursions is preparing its report in Delhi.
The last runway incursion was two weeks ago, when an Indigo flight missed the taxiway it was supposed to take and found itself on the runway only 1.8 km from an approaching Jet Airways flight. A collision was averted as the Jet Airways pilot did not land but made a go-around.
