Bangalore: Private airlines and the Federation of Indian Airlines (FIA) are mum about the proposed rule of aviation regulator Directorate General of Civil Aviation to give compensation to air commuters in the eventuality of cancellation or delays in flights which have not been caused by situations like fog or any reason beyond the control of the airlines.
The new rules, which are to be finalised after consultation with the public, have been proposed to ensure protection for air travellers and has come in the wake of rapid expansion of air services on domestic and international routes.
However, the airlines and the FIA — the apex industry body formed by the scheduled carriers — refused to comment if they accepted such a proposal which states, “Financial compensation would be given only if the ticket cost is higher than the compensation amount”.
A Kingfisher Airlines spokesperson said that the company would not comment on the proposed rules right now and other airlines said that they were yet to see the new rules, also known as the Civil Aviation Requirement (CAR), which is expected to bring the Indian aviation law in tandem with the Montreal Convention in regard to the liabilities of the airlines.
