Umroi airport land survey next week

Shillong: The survey of land for the expansion of Umroi airport — to facilitate the landing of bigger aircraft — will begin on June 7.
At present, only 50-seater aircraft are allowed to land there for lack of space.
Meghalaya transport minister A.T. Mondal told the state Assembly today that the government had received more than Rs 50 crore (Rs 20.38 crore in 2007-08 and Rs 30 crore in 2009-10) from the Centre to expand Umroi airport.
In reply to a question by Conrad Sangma (NCP), Mondal said the Ri Bhoi district administration would initiate the land acquisition process under the Land Acquisition Act, 1984.
After a supplementary question by P.A. Sangma of the NCP, chief minister Mukul Sangma intervened saying the transport minister visited the site recently and tried to expedite the land acquisition process so that work can begin soon.
The minister admitted that the delay was because of hurdles related to the land acquisition process, as it was difficult to convince the land owners to part with the land.
