Chennai: Two planes that took off from Chennai airport narrowly escaped a midair collision near Mumbai on Saturday when they came in proximity of the other.
A tragedy was averted only due to the sounding of the onboard Resolution Advisory, an alert given out by the Traffic Alert and Collision Avoidance System in such instances when flights come within close range of each other.The alert sounded in the Jet Airways Boeing (flight 9W2119) which was carrying 142 passengers onboard when the Mumbai Air Traffic Control asked the pilot to descend to 11,000 feet.
The pilot of the Air India flight IC 174 which had 70 passengers onboard has also reported having sighted another aircraft while in flight.
The incident took place when both planes were approaching the Mumbai airport.
