Ahmedabad: With the completion of its second phase, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport, covering a floor area of over 40,000 square metres, has become the eighth busiest airport in the country, equipped to handle 120 flights, including 20 international, on a daily basis.
The new terminal will be inaugurated by Union Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel on Sunday.
Constructed at a cost of Rs 300 crore, the new terminal is modelled on the lines of the new airport in Singapore, considered to be one of the most advanced in the world. Centrally airconditioned with energy-efficient devices, the new terminus has a passenger handling capacity of 2,200 at peak hours. It is equipped with the state-of-the-art fire-fighting equipment and protection system. It also has integrated building management and security system.
The new terminal has been developed by CPG consultants, who built Singapore’s Changi airport. The terminal has seven boarding gates, including four aero-bridges, to enable the passengers enter the aircraft from the terminal building. It has 32 check-in-centres.
The new airfield has the capacity to accommodate as many as 30 big aircraft like Jumbo and Airbus-380, a double-decker aircraft requiring huge parking space, thus converting the airport among the biggest in the country. The parking space outside the airport can accommodate more than 900 cars. The new terminus, according to airport officials, has been developed with a view to divert air traffic from Mumbai international airport, which is very congested.
