Crackdown on baggage handlers at IGI

New Delhi: Authorities at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) have started a crackdown to prevent and catch baggage handlers who steal money and valuable items.
The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), which looks after airport security, have caught six baggage handlers in the past one week for stealing stuff from registered bags of passengers stored in aircraft.
On Monday, the bag of a senior official working for the Ministry of Consumer Affairs was tampered with and Rs 10,000 were stolen from it.
“After viewing the CCTV camera footage, we closed in on three people who had access to the cargo hold area,” CISF spokesman Rohit Katiyar said.
The baggage handlers, Kuldeep Kumar and Anup Kumar Rawat, were caught and handed over to Delhi Police. They had opened three bags and stolen Rs.15,000 from one, Rs. 10,000 from the official’s bag and the $100 note, a gold coin and a gold chain, both weighing 5 grams, from another bag.
Two baggage handlers — Ravinder Kumar and Brijender Kumar, working for AV Expert, another ground handling agency — were caught on July 1 during a random search.
