Directorate general of civil aviation authorities give Mumbai airport a miss

Mumbai: Barely two months after denying Mumbai airport permission to even test the advanced version of the air traffic automation system, auto track III (AT3), the directorate general of civil aviation (DGCA) has allowed it to be used in the new T3 terminal at Delhi airport.
After the May 22 Mangalore crash, the authority started driving towards safety measures, resulting in a new civil aviation circular (CAR) almost every fortnight. But this ad hoc approval to T3 has proved how half-baked the drive is.
According to sources, it was the DGCA that had asked the airport authority of India (AAI) to implement the new AT3 system at both Mumbai and Delhi airports.
“The AAI conducted safety and risk assessment for the system at both the airports and sent the proposal for approval to the DGCA in June. The aviation regulator, however, refused to give certification saying that it was not involved in the process and needed time to study the system,” said an AAI official.
