HC issues ultimatum in Nagpur airport case

Nagpur: The controversy over Nagpur International airport being run without valid license seems to be far from over.
Even on Wednesday the director general of civil aviation (DGCA) failed to inform the court on action it is contemplating to take against those who are running the international airport without valid licence despite clear directions during last hearing.
A division bench comprising justices Sharad Bobde and Arun Chaudhari while expressing deep anguish gave an ultimatum to the DGCA by the way of last chance to submit report on action against those running airport without aerodrome licence which is mandatory as per DGCA rules 78, 83 and 133-A of Aircraft Rules, 1937.
A court's directives came while hearing a PIL filed by VED for early transfer of Nagpur airport without which the mega project of MIHAN will not take off. The petitioner charged union aviation ministry for “deliberately” delaying the process of transfer. During the last hearing the court came down heavily on the DGCA.
Citing the Mangalore air crash where 160 passengers lost their lives, it asked who will own up responsibility in case of any eventuality. Ironically, as per the reliable reports, as many as 40 airports across India are operating without valid license.
