Juhu aerodrome to take load off airport?

DGCA and AAI are considering extending the runway at the aerodrome to take care of smaller aircraft, which constitute nearly 18 per cent of the airport's daily movements
The Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) and the Airport Authority of India (AAI) have proposed an increase in the length of the runway at the Juhu aerodrome and its subsequent use for small commercial aircraft as a step towards solving the city's air traffic congestion woes.
In the proposal mooted recently, the two bodies have asked for the runway's length to be increased from 1,100 to 2,000 metres to allow take-off and landing of smaller aircraft like ATRs and Turboprops. The AAI has also appointed consultancy firm KPMG to conduct a feasibility assessment.
DGCA and AAI have proposed for the runway's length to be increased from 1,100 to 2,000 metres.
AAI sources said that if the report turns out positive and the proposal gets final clearance from the Civil Aviation Ministry, the Juhu aerodrome will be able to take care of nearly 18 per cent of air traffic movement (take-offs and landings) at the Mumbai airport.
