Mangalore crash victims' kin may get far less than 76L promised

Mangalore: The trauma for the Mangalore air crash victims' families shows no signs of letting up. First it was the fiasco with DNA identification of the bodies, now it is with regard to compensation. It transpires that contrary to the earlier expectation of Rs 76 lakh for each of the dead, their families are likely to receive much less. If the actual salary of the deceased were to be the deciding factor, it would hurt the families of the bereaved.
An association, set up to fight the cause of victims of Air India's IX-812 crash at Bajpe airport near Mangalore on May 22, has demanded that the authorities concerned arrive at final compensation amount at the earliest. Such an amount should be based on 'worth of life' of each individual and not merely on his or her income, a norm that would deny any sizable relief to the victims.
On the day of the crash, Praful Patel had said in Mangalore that as per the Montreal Convention the families of the deceased would get Rs 76 lakh while the injured would be compensated to the extent of their injury.
