Mumbai airport may miss the September-end deadline for installation of the surface movement radar, a technology that alerts air traffic controllers (ATCs) about aircraft and vehicles on the tarmac. The radar is especially useful during poor visibility.
The civil aviation ministry had set the September-end deadline for commissioning of the system after repeated instances of runway incursions and near-misses on the ground. However, the Airport Authority of India (AAI) was unable to finalise location for two radars and sensors. While the radar has been acquired since last Sepetmber and civil works are being completed, the AAI is yet to get a timeframe from the Dutch supplier for installation.
