42 of 53 airports run by AAI without safety licence from DGCA: Praful Patel

New Delhi: Forty-two airports out of 53 being run by Airports Authority of India (AAI) and 22 defence airfield where civil flights operate, are running without a safety licence from the directorate general of civil aviation (DGCA).
"There are about 53 operational airports of AAI out of which 47 airports are used for scheduled or regular flight operations. There are five airports of AAI which have obtained safety licence from the DGCA," civil aviation minister Praful Patel informed the Lok Sabha today.
Apart from it, 20 out of 22 defence airfields, which handle civil flight operations, also do not have safety licence, he said.
"There are 22 defence airfields where civil enclaves are there to handle civil flight operations, out of which 20 are being used for regular flight operations. These defence airports are not licensed," Patel said in a written reply to the Lok Sabha.
He, however, said nine other airports -- belonging to joint venture companies, state government and others -- have the required DGCA safety license. And out of nine, six airports were being used for scheduled flights operations.
