Air India employees unions wait for company''s turnaround plan

Mumbai: As Air India started mulling renegotiating salaries of employees, the unions have said they were still waiting for the company's turnaround plan which the management had promised to give them several weeks ago. "The unions were assured by the management that a copy of the airline's turnaround will be given to the unions before finalising the plan. However, we have still not received it," union leaders told PTI here. They said all the 12 unions of the national carrier were planning to jointly take up the issue next week. The union leaders, who wished anonymity, said they were not able to make any suggestions on the plan as the management had not yet given them its copies which it had promised at a meeting last month. In July, Air India management had made a presentation on the turnaround plan to the unions, who were told that the plan would be given to them shortly, they said. Even as Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel ruled out any wage cut in the airline, reports said the management was considering re-negotiating different wage agreements with all the trade unions. Patel had last month ruled out any wage cut and said "there is no real need to cut manpower or reduce jobs or send people packing home...that is certainly not the objective." Despite these assurances, "there is still talk about the management affecting a wage cut after the Commonwealth Games in October," the union representatives said, alleging that the management did not want any flight disruption during the games. Air India is the official carrier for the games.
