Airline revenues perk up; AI takes off but still behind Jet & Kingfisher

New Delhi: After enduring more than a year of turbulence, national carrier Air India is showing signs of revival, as its revenues jumped almost 18 per cent in the quarter-ending June this year as compared to the same period in the previous year. The total revenue of National Aviation Company of India Limited (NACIL) revenue stood at Rs 4, 299 crore for April to July 2010, an increase of Rs 608 crore from April-July 2009.
At a time when other full-fledged domestic airlines are posting impressive growth, Air India too has been able to reap benefits from improvement in the aviation environment. However, it lags behind its rivals — Jet Airways and Kingfisher Airlines. During the same period, country’s largest airline and Air India’s principal competitor, Naresh Goyal-owned Jet Airways has shown a growth of 21.7 per cent in its revenues as compared to the previous year. Similarly, industrialist Vijay Mallya’s Kingfisher Airlines, which is struggling to meet vendor payments, showed 30 per cent growth during the same period. These revenues include income from passenger ticket sales, excess baggage, cargo and mail.
