Jayalalithaa urges Karunanidhi to drop green field airport proposal

Chennai: Former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa has appealed to the Chief Minister M Karunanidhi to drop the proposed Greenfield Airport at the outskirts of the Chennai City in Sriperumbudur.
ALL India Anna Dravida Munnetral Kazhagam(AIADMK) will organize a demonstration on Wednesday to stress the demand, Ms Jayalalitha said in a statement issued here on Tuesday.
The project would affect the livelihood of thousands of people in about 20 villages, she said.
The AIADMK supremo said the DMK Government was fast acquiring about 6,921 acres of farm lands in about 20 villages in Kadambattur and Sriperumbudur Unions, posing a grave threat to the livelihood of poor farmers in these areas.
Further she said the acquisition of agricultural lands would not only deprive the people of these villages their livelihood, but also result in cut in agricultural production at a time when the state was facing shortage of food production.
Strongly condemning the government for acquiring the farm lands to establish airport and demanding that it drop the project immediately, the AIADMK would organize a protest demonstration in front of the government office in Sriperumbudur , Ms Jayalalithaa said.
