Mumbai: The downturn in the aviation industry seems to be over. After a renewed demand for pilots, airlines are now recruiting cabin crew, too. Jet Airways, which hit headlines for retrenchment of cabin crew members in 2008, is now ready to take back the employees it had laid off.
Only a week ago, the airline took back more than 100 of its retrenched crew. For this, only regular medical checks were conducted. There were no interviews. said a Jet Airways spokesperson: "We are following the regular procedure for recruitment. However, we haven't conducted the interviews again as we are already familiar with the candidates."
For the crew, it is a new lease of life. After spending lakhs on training and finishing schools, they were scouring for jobs again after the airline sacked them. While some of them got jobs with foreign carriers, many worked as hotel receptionists, or just waited for another opportunity. "The improvement in the aviation industry has given back our jobs. Only a week ago, we got a letter from Jet Airways saying they would like us back.
Within a week, we were asked to bring our required documents relating to our qualification and our medical checks were conducted. We have been allotted posts as well. The airline did not conduct interviews," said a 23-year-old crew member who was laid off in May last year and was offered a job recently.
