New Delhi: SpiceJet Ltd, which runs the low-cost airline of the same name, is bringing back some employees who had quit in the past two years in a bid to strengthen its depleted team as it sets out to launch international operations backed by a new investor-owner.
About half-a-dozen senior executives, including the airline’s former chief executive officer Sanjay Aggarwal, exited the airline since Sun TV founder Kalanithi Maran and his unlisted firm KAL Airways Pvt Ltd agreed to buy 37.7% in Spicejet. The exits marked a significant change in the top team at the airline, and were the biggest since 2008 when US investor Wilbur Ross invested $100 million (`466 crore today) in the Indian airline and brought in Aggarwal and his team to revive SpiceJet’s fortunes. Many executives who had left the firm then are returning, said two SpiceJet executives who did not wished to be identified.
Shalini Vohra, who was general manager, human resources with SpiceJet when it launched till 2008 has been brought back as vice-president (human resources) from Kuwait’s Wataniya Airways. Shraboni Mitra, previously general manager (call centre) at the airline returns as vice-president (customer services). And Jack Ekl, who was the chief pilot of SpiceJet during 2008, and quit to join Rwanda’s RwandAir and later Bangladesh’s GMG Airlines is to return as executive vice president, flight operations.
Their return should offset the vacuum created by a spate of exits in the wake of Maran’s acquisition.
Anish Srikrishna, senior vice-president (marketing) left the airline two months ago; his exit was followed by that of Mandeep Baweja, vice-president (human resources), Sarabjeet Kaur, vice-president (customer services), Manish Koul general manager (airport services). CEO Sanjay Aggarwal too left.
