Tainted civil aviation chief in CBI dock over excess assets

Mumbai: The bad days of shunted bureau of civil aviation services additional commissioner Manoj Malviya are far from over. The CBI has registered a case against Malviya and his wife for having assets more than their known source of income.
The case was registered by the anti-corruption bureau of CBI on July 27 after the agency conducted a search at Malviya’s ancestral house in Allahabad and seized some documents. These documents proved that he has assets beyond his income.
Malviya was sent back by the ministry of home affairs to his parent cadre (West Bengal police) on July 8 following a CBI report which stated that he had misused his official position to favour airlines and airport operators GVK, which owns Mumbai International Airport Limited (MIAL).
According to the CBI, every time Malviya came to Mumbai he would stay in 5-star hotels and his bills would be remitted either by MIAL or the Airports Authority of India. He would acquire false hotel bills and submit it for reimbursement.
But his bluff was called when he claimed his hotel bills from AAI even though MIAL had paid for it.
