Ahmedabad: As many as five cases of fake passport have been registered by the Ahmedabad immigration department at the Sardarnagar police station in the first week of September alone. One such case is that of Anil Patel, who was caught by the immigration department on March 7, 2010, carrying an emergency certificate while returning from Frankfurt by an Air India flight.
Here, it is worth noting that an emergency certificate is given by the US consulate to people who are caught staying illegally in the country or whose visa has expired. These people are then deported to their country of origin.
On landing, they are caught by the immigration department of their respective cities and a case is registered against them at a police station for further investigation. At the Sardarnagar police station, the fake passport cases are first registered as non-cognizable offence and then taken up for further investigation.
According to case details, Patel paid Rs25 lakh to an agent for arranging a fake passport and tickets for him. He first went to Mumbai, where he was introduced to one Rafik. Rafik took him to Mexico and then left him near Texas border from where he entered the US. After staying there for nearly 10 years Patel decided to return to Ahmedabad when recession made it impossible for him to survive in the US. He approached the Indian embassy in the US and returned on emergency certificate.
