New Delhi: The appointment of a new CEO for Air India’s low-cost arm Air India Express will be delayed by at least a week, since it has to follow some “set principles”.
Two weeks ago, Air India COO Gustav Baldauf had said that AI Express would have a new CEO within a fortnight. The appointment of a CEO is a part of an exercise to restructure AI and hive off AI Express as a separate entity.
“As per the set principles, key managers are appointed only after due discussion, debate and consultation in a board meeting,” a senior Air India official said. “The decision (to appoint a CEO) was taken without any of the above,” the official said.
“Such decisions are not normally taken by circulating a notice among board members and that is why the delay. The decision to appoint a CEO, a Chief Training Officer (CTO) and a Chief Information Officer (CIO) will be taken in the AI Express’ board meeting, scheduled on October 5,” the official said.
The company has zeroed in on Captain Pawan Arora, who was the fleet captain for budget airline IndiGo, for the post of AI Express’ CEO. Stefan Sukumar and Kamaljit Rattan are the names for the posts of CTO and CIO, respectively. All of them will be offered a salary of over Rs 1 crore per annum, which is eight times the salary of the Air India CMD and 10 times that of the functional directors.
