Malda may soon regain place on airport map

Kolkata/Malda: A team from the Airports Authority of India (AAI) will reach Malda on Thursday to examine the feasibility of resuming flights to the North Bengal town famous for mangoes.
AAI regional executive director (east) Gautam Mukherjee, who will lead the exploratory team, said the existing aerodrome as well as an alternative site will be examined. "The current aerodrome is sandwiched between rail tracks and a sub station. In the past two decades, when it lay idle, buildings have mushroomed in the neighbourhood. I have heard about some encroachment as well. If it has become too congested for operations, we will look at an alternative site for a greenfield airport," Mukherjee told TOI on Wednesday.
While the current aerodrome is located in Malda town, the 600-acre alternative land is 5 km away, in Narayanpur.
