New Delhi: Having hit cost overruns, the Airports Authority of India's (AAI) ambitious plan of modernising the metro airports of Chennai and Kolkata has now reached the finance ministry's table. The Public Investment Board (PIB) is slated to study the cost overrun estimates submitted by the AAI soon, said a senior AAI official.
The modernisation works at Chennai and Kolkata, originally estimated to cost Rs 1,805 crore and Rs 1,942 crore have shot up as per the latest estimates of AAI. “The revised Chennai airport project cost is estimated to be around Rs 2,015 crore. We have already submitted the estimates to the civil aviation ministry which has given its approval. Now, we are waiting for PIB nod for both the projects' overruns,” said the official.
At the Kolkata airport, AAI had listed three major modenisation works — first, construction of an 1.8 lakh sq m Integrated Passenger Terminal and; second, a rapid exit taxiway from the main runway to the secondary runway and extension of second runway; third aircraft parking bays.
