IndiGo gets DGCA show-cause notice

New Delhi: The Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has served a show-cause notice on IndiaGo Airlines, the country’s most successful low-cost carrier, for not having operated enough flights on Category IIA routes last month.
As per existing norms, every Indian airline is required to deploy at least 10 per cent of the capacity it deploys on prime routes to stations which fall under Category IIA.
These stations include Jammu & Kashmir, the North-East Region, Andaman & Nicobar and Lakshadweep Islands. Airlines are required to connect these stations with stations outside these regions to promote connectivity.
As per Schedule VI of the Aircraft Rules, if an airline is found guilty of violating these requirements, it may have to pay a fine of up to Rs2 lakh, its officials may face imprisonment for up to six months or both. According to sources, no Indian airline has violated Category IIA norms in more than a decade and IndiGo would have some serious explaining to do to extricate itself from this problem.
In September this year, when Srinagar airport was closed for about a
fortnight and flights were being operated from the nearby Avantipur Airport, IndiGo fell short of the 10% criterion because it refused to operate flights from the alternate airport.
