Metro hands over road tunnel at IGIA to airports authority

New Delhi: The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has handed over to the Airports Authority of India (AAI) an underground road tunnel. It promises to make travel between the domestic airport and the Indira Gandhi International Airport hassle-free.
The six-lane, 371-m tunnel runs underneath the main runway and forms part of the 1.3-km road.
DMRC managing director E. Sreedharan said: "The AAI wanted a tunnel beneath one of their runways and wanted it to be finished before the Commonwealth Games. We have now finished everything, the approach road, the tunnel, the lighting, everything on time." Officials said the new route w start from the roundabout near the domestic airport and will end on the international airport premises.
At present, passengers from the domestic airport have to drive to the choked NH-8 and take a turn down the road to reach the IGIA. Sources said there was a worry that the existing approach road to Terminal-3, next to the existing international terminal, would become a traffic nightmare once most passengers begin using it.
