Heritage Minister Alun Ffred Jones was unable to represent Wales at the opening ceremony of the Commonwealth Games after a mix-up by staff meant he missed his flight.
The Plaid Cymru Minister arrived at Heathrow airport on Saturday to discover his flight to India had left hours earlier. The confusion was blamed on a clerical error.
A spokesman for Mr Jones said: “Due to an administrative mix-up the Minister arrived late for his flight at Heathrow.”
Mr Jones said: “It’s disappointing not to be able to attend the opening ceremony but I would like to take this opportunity to wish the team the very best of luck for the Games. We are all very proud of their achievements to date and we know that they are determined to do their best for Wales in Delhi.”
Rival politicians reacted with a mixture of amusement and sympathy.
Conservative Assembly leader Nick Bourne said in a message on Twitter: “Our Sport Minister has missed the flight to opening of Delhi Games by 12 hours – looks like a Capt Mainwaring inability to handle 24 clock.”
