Turbulent times ahead for airports regulator as top posts stay vacant

Though Airports Economic Regulatory Authority of India (AERA) faces serious manpower problems, the response to the advertisements it had put out on 4 August has been uniformly poor. AERA had also written to various ministries and Central organisations to help out, but to no avail — forcing it to extend the deadline to 28 October.
Several senior and mid-level vacancies are waiting to be filled at AERA’s headquarters in Delhi’s Safdarjung Airport. Since AERA was set up last year, it has attracted only a handful of senior personnel: Yashwant S Bhave, chairman; PM Vijaykar, member; Sandeep Prakash, secretary; GS Bawa and CV Deepak, officers on special duty; and Reena Sethi, deputy chief.
While nobody is willing to speak up openly, the reluctance to join is very likely because the officials sought to be moved are comfortable in their current postings. But then, can such personnel be entrusted with the job at all?
